AI Basics for Scientists and Engineers (4 PDH)

This four-hour short course will provide an introduction to Artificial Intelligence (AI), Large Language Models (LLMs) and Machine Learning (ML), discuss the benefits of AI and LLMs for engineering and science companies, consider the ethics related to the use of AI in engineering, and review how to prompt GPT to generate helpful output.

Dr. Rohan Loveland is an assistant professor at South Dakota Mines and an expert in machine learning.  His current research is focused on developing algorithms and tools and applying them to large pilot data-sets in agri-business, asteroid warning systems, and finance. Dr. Loveland worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory as a Research Scientist for most of his career before coming to South Dakota Mines. 

Breakfast and coffee breaks will be provided. The Pearson Alumni Center is located at 330 E. Kansas City St. in Rapid City next to the Surbeck Center at South Dakota Mines.
