Landsat Black Hills Prints

The image appeared on the cover of the Summer 2001 Hardrock Magazine - the official publication of South Dakota Mines. It simulates a view of the Black Hills from a vantage point high above southeastern Meade County, SD.

Several digital images acquired by the Landsat 7 satellite while orbiting 438 miles above the Black Hills were formed into a mosaic. Through data processing techniques, the mosaic was then draped over digital terrain data creating the three-dimensional perspective. The image was created by Mines student intern Mark Fersdahl (EE 02) while working at the U. S. Geological Survey's EROS Data Center near Sioux Falls, SD. EROS is the national archive for all civilian U.S. land remote sensing data and is the operator of the Landsat satellites now in orbit. Other Tech alumni working with Mark on the Landsat program included Jon Christopherson (EE 84), Steve Labahn (EE 90) and Brad Gross (EE 93). Special thanks go to these alumni for creating this memorable print.
