Dr. Stanley Howard

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Dr. Stanley M. Howard, Professor Emeritus of Metallurgy and Materials,South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. He passed away Saturday May 15, 2021 at a Rapid City Hospital.

Dr. Howard was born in Wyoming in 1945, excelling in school and receiving his Doctorate in Engineering in 1971. He moved to the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1971 and began a distinguished 50+ year career of research, teaching, mentoring, and contributions to science and engineering. Dr. Howard served as past Chairman of the Faculty Senate at the School of Mines, received the Presidential Award for Outstanding Professor, and won the School of Mines Ennenga Teaching Award. He was also a long time Registered Professional Engineer. Dr. Howard was a vital part of The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, (TMS) serving in many positions during his 55-year professional career. He served as President and was awarded the distinguished Alexander R. Scott Service Award in March of this year. All who worked, served, or were instructed by Dr. Howard are better because of his talents and gifts. He was known around the world as a cheerful soul, blessed with the gift of understanding, and an amazing teacher and mentor to thousands of Hardrocker students. He has an inner joy for science and felt the good Lord's blessings every day for his ability to practice good science! He professionally served our community, nation and humanity for 50+ years in many church, civic and academic pursuits.

He lived a life of consequence, was a giant in science and will be greatly missed.
