Tour the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF)
Discover cutting-edge science taking place deep underground in Lead, SD. At SURF, researchers are investigating dark matter, neutrinos, and the mysteries of the universe.

While exploring the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center families and learners of all ages can challenge themselves to understand the underground dewatering system, predict how the sun’s height in the sky translates to sun exposure in the Open Cut, watch as their ScribbleBot creature creates artwork of its own accord, and get any of their questions answered by the attending Visitor Center staff.
Black Hills Mining Museum
Special Rates: Adults $13.00, Children special rate by age, and children under 6 free.
Tour guides will escort you on a fascinating tour of our recreated underground gold mine, created by more than 140 Homestake miners and former mining employees over 30 years ago. This realistic exhibit is the only comprehensive look at both early-day and modern underground mining in the Black Hills, telling the story of the Western Hemisphere’s deepest gold mine. Tours are approximately one hour long and start on the hour, starting at 9 a.m. with the last tour starting at 4 p.m. located at 323 W. Main St., Lead, South Dakota 57754
