An engineering effort to return a beloved icon to its proper glory.
The M Hill monogram has become a beloved symbol for South Dakota Mines and the surrounding community, having inspired time-honored traditions such as the annual Homecoming hike and whitewashing of the “M.” Cracking, separation, and concrete spalling over time have made the aging monogram aesthetically unappealing and have potential to cause injuries. Many of the graduation plaques are now unreadable due to weathering and excessive whitewashing.
To ensure M Hill remains a fixture of alma mater pride and a familiar icon of the Rapid City skyline for generations to come, a complete restoration of the original plaques and monogram letters, upgraded LED lighting, and a reworked trail are essential. More than $160,000 was raised last fall. Thank you to all who were and continue to be involved!
