Postcard From a Student: Macy Sager

"When I decided I wanted to become a geologist, this is exactly what I pictured: adventure, travel, and education all coming together."

Greetings from Mines!

Hello! My name is Macy, and I’m heading into my senior year at South Dakota Mines. This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to spend five weeks in Bolu Province, Türkiye, completing my geology field camp.

The geology of the North Anatolian Fault was astounding, but what I’ll remember most is everything I learned along the way. The work was rigorous, and the weather was hot, but alongside phenomenal instructors and terrific classmates, I gained so much more than field experience. I learned about leadership, teamwork and geology while immersing myself in a new culture, speaking Turkish, trying incredible food, and making friends nearly everywhere we went.

When I decided I wanted to become a geologist, this is exactly what I pictured: adventure, travel, and education all coming
together. Sometimes I still have to remind myself that it was real life and not a dream.

Now, I’m looking forward to one more year at Mines. I can’t wait for Homecoming, Fall Fest, seeing freshmen discover the clubs, people, and passions that make campus feel like home, and, of course, seeing which engineering team takes home the title in the annual pumpkin chucking contest! Looking back, I’m incredibly grateful for the field trips, labs, hands-on experiences, and mentors who have helped shape me into a better student, friend, and leader.

Thank you for helping make experiences like mine possible. Your support gives Mines students the opportunity to learn far beyond the classroom and to discover just how far their education can take them.
I’m excited to see where this final year takes me!
